चतुः पंचाशस्सर्गः

कामधेनुं वशिष्ठो अपि यदा न त्यजते मुनिः।
तदास्य शबलां राम विश्वामित्रो अन्वकर्षत ॥

स॥ हे राम ! मुनिः वसिष्ठः यदा कामधेनुं न त्यजते तदा अस्य शबलां विश्वामित्रः अन्वकर्षत ॥

’'Oh Rama ! When sage Vasishta refused to give Sabala, then Viswamitra took Sabala by force'.

नीयमानातु शबला राम राज्ञा महात्मना ।
दुःखिता चिंतयामास रुदंती शोककर्शिता ॥

स॥ यदा राज्ञा महात्मना नीयमानातु शबला शोककर्शिता दुःखिता रुदंती चिंतयामास॥

When the great Viswamitra was taking her away , Sabala weeping in sorrow and in sheer agony started to think as follows.

परित्यक्ता वसिष्ठेन किमहं सु महात्मना ।
याहं राजभटैर्दीना ह्रीयेयं भृशदुःखिता॥

स॥ अहं सुमहात्मना वसिष्ठेन परित्यक्ता किं । राजभटैः ह्रीयेयं अहं दीना भृश दुःखिता ॥

'Being taken away by the kings soldiers I am helpless and in sorrow. Have I been forsaken by the venerable sage Vasishta ?

किं मयापकृतं तस्य महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ।
यन्मां अनागसं भक्ताम् इष्ठां त्यजति धार्मिकः ॥

स॥ मया अपकृतं किम् ।(अहं) तस्य महर्षेः भावितात्मनः। मां अनागसं भक्ताम् (सः) धार्मिकः इष्ठां त्यजति ॥

"I have always been liked by him. Is the pious one giving me, who is ever devoted to him, away willingly ? What mistake have I done ? "

इति सा चिंतयित्वातु विनिश्वस्य पुनः पुनः ।
निर्दूय तां स्तदा भृत्यान् शतश्शत्रुसूदनः ।
जगामानिलवेगेन पादमूलं महात्मनः ॥

स॥ सा इति चिन्तयित्वा पुनः पुनः विनिश्वस्य(तु)। तदा तां शतश्शत्रुसूदनः भृत्यान् निर्दूय अनिलवेगेन महात्मनः पाद मूलं जगाम॥

That Sabala thinking along these lines was sighing repeatedly. Then she made herself free of the hundreds of those enemies and moving at the speed of Vayu fall at the feet of the venerable sage Vasishta.

शबला सा रुदंती च क्रोशंती चेदमब्रवीत् ।
वसिष्ठस्याग्रतः स्थित्वा मेघदुंदुभिराविणी ॥

स॥ सा शबला वसिष्ठाग्रतः स्थित्वा रुदंती क्रोशंती च सा मेघदुंदुभिराविणी इदं अब्रवीत्॥

Sabala then standing in front of Sage Vasishta weeping in agony spoke with voice resembling the sound of thunder and drums.

भगवन् किं परित्यक्ता त्वया अहं ब्रह्मणस्सुत ।
यस्माद्राजभृता मां हि नयंते त्वत्सकाशतः ॥

स॥ भगवन् ! यस्मात् राजभृता मां हि त्वत्सकाशतः नयंते ब्रह्मणस्सुत त्वया अहं किं परित्यक्ता ।

"Oh Bhagavan ! The kings soldiers are taking me away from you. So have you forsaken me ?"

एवमुक्तस्तु ब्रह्मर्षिः इदं वचन मब्रवीत् ।
शोक संतप्तहृदयां स्वसारमिव दुःखिताम्॥

स॥ (सा) एवमुक्तस्तु शोक संतप्त हृदयां स्वसारमिव दुःखिताम् ब्रह्मर्षिः इदं वचनं अब्रवीत्|

'Having been told thus , the sage with his heart full of sorrow spoke to Sabala as though she is addressing his sister in distress'.

नत्वां त्यजामि शबले न अपि मे अपकृतं त्वया ।
एष त्वां नयते राजा बलान्मत्तो महाबलः ॥

स॥ हे शबले ! त्वां न त्यजामि । अपि मे त्वया न अपकृतं ।एष बलान्मत्तो महाबलः राजा त्वां नयते ।

"Oh Sabala ! I have not forsaken you. There is no fault of yours. The king intoxicated with his own strength is taking you away".

न हि तुल्यं बलं मह्यं राजा त्वद्य विशेषतः ।
बली राजा क्षत्रियश्च पृथिव्याः पतिरेवच ॥

स॥ त्वद्य तुल्यम् बलं मह्यं न हि ।विशेषतः राजा बली क्षत्रियः च पृथिव्याः पतिः एव च ।

"I do not have force to equal him. Specifically the king is powerful, belongs to warrior class, and is the ruler of this land ".

इयमक्षौहिणी पूर्णा सवाजि रथ संकुला।
हस्ति ध्वजसमाकीर्णा तेनासौ बलवत्तरः ॥

स॥ पूर्ण अक्षौहिणीहस्ति ध्वज समाकीर्णा सवाजि रथ संकुला इयं तेन असौ बलवत्तरः ॥

"With a large contingent of forces full with elephants chariots flying flags etc and he is more powerful".

एवमुक्ता वसिष्ठेन प्रत्युवाच विनीतवत् ।
वचनं वचनज्ञा सा ब्रह्मर्षिम् अमित प्रभम्॥

स॥ वसिष्ठेन एवं उक्ता तु (शबला) विनीतवत् वचनज्ञा सा अमितप्रभम् ब्रह्मर्षिं (इदं) वचनं प्रत्युवाच।

Having been told thus by the venerable sage , Sabala with utmost respect spoke to the the Brahmarshi ,the best of Rishis , and one who is the expert on the word , whose brilliance is visible.

न बलं क्षत्रियस्याहुः ब्राह्मणो बलवत्तरः ।
ब्रह्मन् ब्रह्म बलं दिव्यं क्षत्रात्तु बलवत्तरम्॥

स॥ क्षत्रियस्य आहुः बलं न । ब्राह्मणः बलवत्तरः ।हे ब्रह्मन् ! क्षत्रात्तु दिव्यं ब्रह्म बलं बलवत्तरम् ॥

"O Brahman ! The strength of a Kshatriya is not real. The one with the knowledge of Brahman is more powerful. O Brahman ! The celestial Brahmin power is more powerful than a Kshatriyas power".

अप्रमेय बलं तुभ्यं न त्वया बलवत्तरः।
विश्वामित्रो महावीर्यः तेजस्तव दुरासदम् ॥

स॥ तुभ्यं बलं अप्रमेय ।तव तेजः दुरासदम्। विश्वामित्रः महावीर्यः न त्वया बलवत्तरः ।

"Your power is unmatched. Your brilliance is unmatched. Viswamitra is a great warrior. But he is not more powerful than you".

नियुंक्ष्य मां महाभाग त्वद्ब्रह्मबलसंभृताम् ।
तस्य दर्प बलं यत्तन्नाशयामि दुरात्मनः ॥

स॥ हे महाभाग ! त्वद्ब्रह्मबल संभृताम् मां नियुंक्ष्य । दुरात्मनः यत् तस्य दर्प बलं तन् नाशयामि ॥

"Oh Great one ! I am strengthened by your power. Please employ me. I will crush the arrogance of that evil one".

इत्युक्तस्तु तया राम वसिष्ठ स्सुमहायशाः ।
सृजस्वेति तदोवा च बलं परबलारुजम् ॥

स॥ हे राम ! तया इत्युक्तस्तु सु महायशाः वसिष्ठः तत् उवाच बलं पर बलारुजम् सृजस्व इति ।

'Oh Rama! having been told thus the venerable Vasishta said as follows ." Create forces that will crush the forces of the enemies."

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सुरभिः सा अश्रुजत् तदा ।
तस्या हुंभारवोत्सृष्टाः पप्लवा श्शतशो नृपः ॥
नाशयंति बलं सर्वं विश्वामित्रस्य पश्यतः ॥।

स॥ तस्य तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा सा सुरभिः तदा असृजत् । तस्या हूंभारवात् सृष्टाः शतशः नृपः तस्य बलं सर्वं विश्वामित्रस्य पश्यतः नाशयंति।

'Hearing those words of the sage Surabhi then created the forces. The hundreds of kings created from its full throated "hum" , started destroying Viswamitra's forces right in front of him' .
बलं भग्न ततो दृष्ट्वारथेनाक्रम्य कौशिकः ।
स राजा परमक्रुद्धो रोषविस्फारितेक्षणः ।
पप्ल्वान् नाशयामास शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैरपि ॥

स॥ भग्नं बलं ततो दृष्ट्वा स राजा परमक्रुद्धः रोषविस्फा रितेक्षणः कौशिकः रथेन आक्रम्य शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैरपि पप्लवान् नाशयामास ।

Seeing his forces being destroyed , Viswamitra extremely angry with blazing red eyes got on to his chariot and started destroying the attacking forces using his weapons.

विश्वामित्रार्थितान् दृष्ट्वा पप्लवान् शतशस्ततदा ।
भूयएवासृजत् कोपात् शकन् यवन मिश्रितान् ॥

स॥ विश्वामित्रार्थितान् पप्लवान् शतशः दृष्ट्वा तदा कोपात् शकन् यवन मिश्रितान् भूयएव असृजत् ॥

Seeing hundreds of the forces killed by Viswamitra , Sabala then in anger created more forces.

तैरासीत् संवृता भूमिः शकैर्यवन मिश्रितैः ।
प्रभाविद्भिर्महावीर्यैः हेम किंजल्क सन्निभैः ॥
दीर्घासिपट्टिशधरैः हेमवर्णांबरावृत्तैः ।
निर्दग्धं तद्बलं सर्वं प्रदीप्तैरिव पावकैः ॥

स॥ शकैर्यवन मिश्रितैः तैः भूमिः संवृता आसीत् । प्रभाविद्भिः महावीर्यैः हेम किंजल्क सन्निभैः दीर्घासिपट्टिशधरैः हेमवर्णांबरावृत्तैः सर्वं तत् बलं प्रदीप्तैरिव पावकैः निर्दग्धम् ॥

Those armies of Sakas , Yavanas filed the whole earth. They were powerful. They were great warriors. They were carrying long swords. They were wearing the clothes shining with gold. All of them crushed the forces of Viswamitra with great full blown fires.
ततो अस्त्राणि महातेजा विश्वामित्रो मुमोच ह ।
तै स्तैर्यवनकांभोजाः पप्लवाश्चाकुली कृताः ॥

स॥ ततः महातेजा विश्वामित्रः अस्त्राणि मुमोच ह तै स्तैः यवन कांभोजाः पप्लवाश्च अकुली कृताः ।

Then again Viswamitra deployed his weapons scattering away the Yavanas Kambhojas and others .

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकांडे चतुः पंचाशस्सर्गः ॥

Thus ends the fifty fourth chapter of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayana.
